Waalweg in Südtirol Hotel Am Sonneck

Tscharser Waalweg

A particularly lovely walk along a historic irrigation channel on the Vinschger Sonnenberg. Start in the centre of Ciardes. Trail No. 3 leads through chestnut groves and mixed woodland, past the Waalerhütte and the old irrigation bell, to Juval Castle. You can visit the castle or stop at Schlosswirt if you wish. Return to Ciardes along the Stabener Waalweg.

Freibergtour from Lagundo

A varied e-bike tour with wonderful views and plenty to enjoy. From Lagundo, take the cycle path to Merano, then ride through the old town to Maia Alta. The route climbs via St. Georgen and Goyen Castle to Freiberg, where lovely views across Merano await. Continue past Rametz Castle and along the panoramic road to Buschenschank Rauthof. After a leisurely South Tyrolean snack platter, enjoy the beautiful descent back to Lagundo.

Kastanienweg Völlan

The Kastanienweg around Völlan is particularly beautiful in autumn. This gentle trail leads through old chestnut groves, past farms and through the colourful autumn landscape. Along the way, there are lovely views across the Adige Valley and towards the surrounding mountains. Our tip: October and November have a particularly special atmosphere here – just the time for a leisurely autumn walk.

Cycle to Caldaro

A beautiful leisurely ride through South Tyrol's apple orchards and vineyards. From Lagundo's outdoor pool, follow the Etschradweg south to Sigmundskron. Turn off towards Frangart, then ride via Cornaiano and Caldaro down to Lake Caldaro. The section through the vineyards around Caldaro is especially lovely, and the lake is an inviting place for a relaxed break. Return along the same route.

On hot summer days, Lido Algund is a wonderful place to cool down and enjoy a relaxed day. The outdoor pool sits right by the water and offers plenty of space to swim, sunbathe and unwind. After your swim, round off the day with a stroll through Lagundo or a visit to one of the nearby inns.

Kuhalm

Above Lagundo, Kuhalm enjoys a wonderfully peaceful setting with lovely views across the Adige Valley. The atmosphere is relaxed and uncomplicated, just as you would hope at a traditional South Tyrolean Alpine inn. The menu offers hearty mountain dishes and homemade specialities. The spacious sunny terrace is a particularly lovely place to linger after a walk and enjoy the valley views.

Naturnseralm

Naturnser Alm stands at 1.922 m on the Naturnser Nörderberg, with wonderful views of the surrounding mountains. A popular destination for walkers, it offers just the right balance of mountain scenery, a cosy place to stop and South Tyrolean cooking. Depending on your appetite, choose from a small snack to a hearty Alpine dish. And of course, there is something sweet too.
Our tip: The Kaiserschmarrn is a real favourite of ours and tastes especially good after a long walk.

St. Vigil church on Monte San Vigilio

The little St. Vigil church stands at around 1.800 m on Monte San Vigilio and is one of the area's loveliest subjects for a photograph. This simple, historic church sits idyllically among Alpine meadows and larch forests, with the Ortler Group rising behind it. It is particularly atmospheric in autumn, when the larches turn golden yellow.

Goidneralm am Meraner Höhenweg – Hotel am Sonneck

Goidneralm

Goidneralm is a small, unstaffed Alpine hut right on the Meraner Höhenweg, between Hochganghaus and Hohe Wiege. Surrounded by Alpine meadows and mountain scenery, it is a wonderful spot for anyone seeking peace and solitude. There is no bustle or rush here, just nature, fresh mountain air and lovely views of the surrounding peaks.
Right beside Goidneralm is a freely accessible drinking-water fountain. Refill your bottle with fresh water here – a welcome refreshment and useful for the next stage of your walk on the Meraner Höhenweg.

Aschbacherhof bei Algund Hotel Am Sonneck

Aschbacherhof

Aschbacherhof sits at 1.360 m in Aschbach above Lagundo, with lovely views of the Texel Group and Val Venosta. Its welcoming terrace invites you to enjoy a good meal while taking in the mountains. Alongside classic South Tyrolean dishes, the homemade cakes are a particularly good reason to stop.
Our tip: After a walk around Aschbach, enjoy a slice of freshly baked cake and a coffee.

Eishof im Pfossental Hotel Am Sonneck

Eishof in Val di Fosse

At the far end of unspoilt Val di Fosse, Eishof sits at 2.076 m, surrounded by impressive mountains and far from the bustle. From the Vorderkaser car park, a leisurely walk of around 1,5 hours brings you to the mountain inn. The food makes Eishof special too. South Tyrolean specialities are reinterpreted and refined with great attention to detail. The kitchen combines traditional flavours with modern ideas, showing just how creative and surprising a meal at an Alpine inn can be.

A tobogganing trip to Plan

Plan in Val Passiria is a lovely winter destination for a family tobogganing day. Ride the chairlift up, then slide back down the prepared run. The little mountain village sits amid an impressive winter landscape, with plenty of snowy mountain fun beyond the toboggan run too.

Aussichtsplattform Hochmuth – Hotel am Sonneck

Hochmuth viewing platform

For us, the Hochmuth viewing platform above Tirolo is one of the most beautiful photo spots around Merano. It is just a short walk from the upper station of the Hochmuthbahn. From here, take in impressive views over Merano, the Adige Valley and far into the surrounding mountains. The combination of platform, steep mountainside and sweeping panorama is especially striking.

Lake Caldaro

Lake Caldaro is one of South Tyrol's most popular swimming lakes and a lovely destination for a relaxed summer outing. Surrounded by vineyards and gentle hills, you can swim, hire a pedalo or simply enjoy the sunshine on the shore. Its special location makes it one of the warmest swimming lakes in the Alps.

Annenberg Easy Trail in St. Martin

A great mountain bike tour for riders who want to combine a longer ascent with a varied trail descent. From Laces, head up to St. Martin im Kofel, either under your own power or comfortably by cable car. From the upper station, the Annenberg Easy Trail follows forest roads and woodland paths down towards Coldrano. Rated S1–S2, it is technically relatively easy and offers plenty of riding fun before you follow the cycle path back to Laces.

Knottnkino bei Vöran Hotel Am Sonneck

Knottnkino near Verano

A truly special viewpoint: The Knottnkino sits on Rotstein Knott and offers spectacular views across the Adige Valley to the Texel Group and the Dolomites. From the car park at Eggerhof, follow trail No. 14A across meadows and through open woodland. Then take trail No. 14 gently uphill to Rotstein Knott. After around 40–45 minutes, you reach the open-air nature cinema with its 30 seats made of steel and chestnut wood. Our tip: Take your time – the light is especially beautiful here in the late afternoon.

Kneippstation in Vellau – Hotel am Sonneck

Kneipp trail in Vellau

In Vellau above Lagundo, you will find a small, lovingly laid-out Kneipp and barefoot trail in natural surroundings. Different surfaces invite you to walk barefoot and become more aware of the world around you. A lovely, quiet spot for a little break away from the familiar routes. Our tip: Take off your shoes and try the path slowly – a simple yet surprisingly soothing pause.

Ultner Höfeweg Hotel Am Sonneck

Ultner Höfeweg

A particularly beautiful walk through unspoilt Val d'Ultimo. Start in Kuppelwies at the Zoggler reservoir. Follow the sunny side of the valley past old farms, through meadows and woodland to San Nicolò and on to Santa Gertrude. Return along the other side of the valley, past the famous ancient larches of Val d'Ultimo, to Kuppelwies. This circular walk of around 18 km is technically easy and well signposted.

FORST brewery

Just a few minutes away is the historic Spezialbier-Brauerei FORST, based in Forst since 1857. A guided tour lasting around 1,5 hours offers a fascinating look at the history and production of FORST beers and takes you behind the scenes at the brewery. Tours are for visitors aged 16 and over and must be booked by phone. Our tip: Afterwards, take a little piece of South Tyrolean beer culture home from the FORST Shop.

The Winterpromenade in Merano

Merano's Winterpromenade is a beautiful place to walk even in the colder months. The path follows the Passirio through Mediterranean greenery, past palm trees and historic buildings. Its sheltered position makes it especially pleasant when winter has already arrived in the mountains. Our tip: Combine it with a leisurely stroll through town, then enjoy a coffee in the old town.

Vigiljoch Steinbruchtrail

A wonderful combination of views and trail riding. From Töll, climb to Aschbach and continue on forest roads to Schwarze Lacke on Monte San Vigilio. After a short break, the Steinbruchtrail begins here: roots, rocks, loose stones and several hairpin bends take you down this technically demanding single trail, descending around 900 metres to Töll. Our tip: A lovely trail classic for experienced mountain bikers.

Families looking for a little action can try a rafting trip on the Passirio. Paddle together in an inflatable raft, through rapids and the impressive scenery of Val Passiria. At around 2.700 m, Milchscharte is one of the most spectacular viewpoints in the Texel Group Nature Park. From here, an impressive view opens down towards the Spronser Lakes, like small, deep-blue jewels in the high Alpine landscape. The contrast between rugged rocks and lakes makes this a particularly special place for a photograph.

Frühlingstal near Caldaro

A lovely insider tip for early spring is the Frühlingstal between Caldaro and the Monticolo Lakes. The particularly mild microclimate brings nature to life early here. While winter still lingers elsewhere, the forest floor becomes a carpet of spring snowflakes, hepaticas and crocuses, followed by violets and anemones. The gentle path follows the little Angelbach stream through the protected biotope and combines beautifully with a trip to the Monticolo Lakes or Lake Caldaro.

Spronser Lakes

A demanding but beautiful mountain hike to the Spronser Lakes. Start at Leiter Alm, climb via Hochgangscharte to the lakes, then return via Taufenscharte. Oberkaseralm offers a lovely place to stop along the way. Sure-footedness and good fitness are essential for this tour. Our tip: Set off early – the Spronser Lakes are especially beautiful in the morning light.

Asparagus season in South Tyrol

Spring is a season to savour in South Tyrol. The asparagus-growing area around Terlano is especially well known, with fresh South Tyrolean asparagus served from April to May. Local inns prepare it in both traditional and creative ways, often accompanied by a glass of South Tyrolean white wine.
Our tip: If you stay with us in April or May, a trip to Terlano is particularly worthwhile, both for the asparagus and the beautiful vineyards around the village.
